Private Pesticide Applicator Training Program (PAT)

Private Pesticide Applicator Training Program (PAT)

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has announced that the State of Wisconsin will be giving certification extensions for those certifications that have expired after January 31, 2020.

This extension will expire on December 31, 2021.
This includes private applicators and the commercial applicators who received the temporary certifications with T numbers. Those who have already tested in person with DATCP DO NOT have to test again.

See DATCP's official response.

New Applicators and those Seeking New Categories
An online test will be made available for applicators seeking new certifications and/or new categories. This online test will provide a temporary certification that will expire on December 31, 2021. Private applicators may still be able to take the test in-person at the Extension Sheboygan County Office. If you are a new applicator or requesting certification in a new category, please continue below for purchasing PAT manuals as well as for training and testing options.

Private pesticide applicator certification is required to:

  1. Apply, mix and load, or direct the use of restricted-use pesticides (RUPs), for the purpose of producing an agricultural commodity,
  2. Make applications on land owned or rented by you or your employer, or on someone else’s land if for exchange of goods or services between agricultural producers,
  3. Conduct pesticide-safety training for agricultural workers or pesticide handlers as required under the Worker Protection Standard (WPS)

You can order manuals online at the PAT Store with a credit card. Plan 3-5 business days for delivery. We encourage purchasing the PAT manuals online.

For assistance with online purchases, or for in-person purchasing, contact your Sheboygan County Extension Office at (920) 459-5904. Calling ahead for building access is required for in-person purchasing.

Extension will not be conducting in-person Private Applicator Training sessions this winter, however, there are two training options:

    1. Online training will be available beginning December 1, 2020
    2. As in the past, the “self-study” option is available.
    3. The online training is not mandatory, you are welcome to self-study and test only.

    Online Training
    On-line training is available during these periods: December 1-14, 2020, January 1-14, 2021, February 1-14, 2021, March 1-14, 2021, April 1-14, 2021, May 1-14, 2021. Cost for online training is $10.00/person.

    What to expect
For online training, visit the PAT Store. Scroll down and then chose B “Online Private Applicator Training.”

After choosing a training time period from the PAT store, you can begin anytime in the 14-day window you selected. However, just like the in-person training, you must complete this in one sitting. You will not be able to start and stop, except for the designated breaks that are built into the training. Allow yourself approximately 3.5 hours to complete.

    • After successful completion of the online training, you will receive a receipt certifying that you completed the on-line training option “attended training” which requires a 50% passing score for certification.
    • Farmers using the “self-study” option require a 70% passing score for certification.

An online test will be available beginning in early December. Check the PAT Store website for online testing, then chose option Z, “Online Certification Test.” Online testing is available, whether you have completed the “online training” or “self-study” option.

In-person testing at the Sheboygan County Extension Office will be available for persons without online access or who may have difficulty utilizing the on-line service. Appointments are needed for in-person testing.

    • Call the Sheboygan County Extension Office at (920) 459-5904 to schedule an appointment.
    • Bring your photo ID—a driver’s license works well.
    • There is a 2-hour time limit per current DATCP policy.
    • Masks MUST BE WORN while at the Extension Office.
    • Testing will be done individually in a designated space.
    • Cell phones are not allowed in the testing room; they must be left just outside the room.
    • Bring your manual, calculator, and pencils with erasers.
    • Start the PAT certification process early.

    Who needs to be certified
You must be certified if you apply, mix and load, or direct the use of:

    • Restricted-use pesticides (RUPs)
    • Conduct pesticide-safety training for agricultural workers or pesticide handlers as required under the Worker Protection Standard (WPS)
